The National Lottery operator Camelot has just released impressive results with a reported increase of 8% in the six months to October from the same period in 2011. Britons are definitely lotto fans as they bet a combined £3.5 billion in these six months.

Scratch cards were a major part of the total sales reaching £999 million. This is a significant increase from the same period last year too where sales amounted to £816.8 million.

Like all good lotteries the aim of the enterprise is essentially to raise funds for public projects. Camelot managed to raise a whopping £750 million for the London 2012 Olympics and Para Olympics. These funds were primarily raised from its dedicated special lottery games. A record breaking £952.8 million was raised for special causes which are a 4% increase from the previous year.

In terms of cash paid out to players, Camelot dished out £1.9 billion in prize money. The sales of National Lottery tickets are on the increase as their 35% growth in the last decade testifies.
